Varicose And Spider Vein Differences | Beverly Hills Vein Treatment

Many of the patients we see at Aluna Vein Centers visit us for Beverly Hills varicose and spider vein treatment. Some people think that spider veins and varicose veins are the same thing. However, spider veins and varicose veins are two different conditions with each requiring a different treatment approach.

Varicose Veins – Larger and More Bothersome Than Spider Veins

With varicose veins, the valves in the veins do not work properly as they fail to close completely. This condition, which is called venous insufficiency, results in blood pooling in certain parts of the vein. This backward pooling of the blood puts too much pressure on the vein, causing it to expand and protrude, leading to the enlarged, bulgy and twisted veins that are unsightly in appearance.

Varicose veins usually appear on the lower leg and can be itchy, painful and cause a burning and throbbing sensation.

Factors that can put someone at risk for developing varicose veins include:

  • A family history of the condition
  • Aging
  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Hormonal changes

Spider Veins – Smaller, Web-Like Veins Appearing Close to the Skin

Spider veins are the result of venous insufficiency in which the veins struggle to perform. These veins are purple, blue or red colored and get their name because they look similar to spider webs. Spider veins are smaller than varicose veins, closer to the skin, and more likely to appear without any associated symptoms. Because spider veins are generally caused by increased pressure in the veins, people who are on their feet most of the time are more at risk for developing these unsightly veins.

Spider veins typically appear on the legs or ankles but they can appear elsewhere on the body including the face. While spider veins are usually not painful, they can cause itchiness and a burning sensation. Most people who have spider veins are bothered by the appearance of these tiny blue/purple-colored veins more than anything else as they can be rather unsightly.

Factors that can put someone at risk for developing spider veins include:

  • Aging
  • A family history of the condition
  • Taking oral birth control pills
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Standing or sitting for long periods
  • Obesity

As a Southern California vein specialist who provides cosmetic, laser and vein treatment in Encino, Beverly Hills, Irvine & Glendale, Dr. Massoudi has successfully completed thousands of varicose vein procedures. While anyone can be affected by varicose veins, pregnant women are especially prone to developing these raised, swollen veins that bulge near the surface of the skin. These unsightly blue or purple and sometimes squiggly veins are most likely to show up on the legs, although they can also appear elsewhere on the lower body.

At Aluna Vein Centers, we're passionate about helping our patients reclaim youthful, fresh, and vibrant skin, and we believe everyone deserves to love the look and feel of their whole body. That's why we provide a variety of high-quality cosmetic treatments to help our patients achieve radiant skin – and Botox is one of the most popular treatments we provide. But while Botox has seen a surge in popularity over the past decade, there are many misunderstandings about what it is, how it works, and what it's best used for. Let's take a look at this treatment to try and better understand the science and practice of Botox.

Competing Muscles

To understand how Botox works, we first have to understand what causes wrinkles in the first place. As we age, the small muscles under our skin can develop chronic tension, causing them to pull and push in opposite directions. This chronic pulling can cause creases, permanent wrinkles, and fine lines to appear on the face and body. Botox works by relaxing these muscles, helping to restore a smooth, natural appearance to the skin. It's not the right treatment for every condition, but for many instances of wrinkles in the face, Botox lets us rejuvenate the muscles and revive a healthy, naturally youthful appearance.

Common Botox Procedures

So where does Botox shine? Some of the most common areas we treat with Botox include:

  • The Glabella Area (between the eyebrows): Eyebrows are critical to our facial expressions, but their movement over the years can cause vertical lines to appear between them. We can use Botox, in combination with a collagen-based filler, to smooth out these lines.
  • Crow's Feet: Crow's feet, the lines at the outside corners of the eyes, are a common symptom of aging - but Botox can help to smooth them out and restore a youthful appearance to the eyes.
  • Fine Lines: Botox is also commonly used to treat fine lines in the face, helping to calm down overactive muscles and smooth out the lines.
