What Causes Spider Veins
In mild cases, one may experience spider veins, which are tiny veins at the surface of the skin, and can appear without any associated symptoms. There are many different conditions that lead to varicose veins and spider veins. Understanding the difference between cosmetic spider veins and medical varicose veins can make a difference in the long-term management of vein problems. Spider and varicose veins may be an early warning sign of an unhealthy vein network. They are red or blue and get their name because of the web-like nature of the veins. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, except they’re smaller, closer to the skin, and more likely to appear without any associated symptoms. This type of vein is generally caused by increased pressure in the veins. Thus, people who stand for a long time are more at risk for developing spider veins. Using state-of-the-art ultrasound and vein mapping techniques, our registered vascular technicians and board certified vein surgeon, Dr. Massoudi can help you diagnose and treat your problem veins.
How To Tell If You Have Spider Veins
There are many different conditions that lead to varicose veins and spider veins. Understanding the difference between cosmetic spider veins and medical varicose veins can make a difference in the long-term management of vein problems. Spider veins don’t usually cause any symptoms, which is why they are considered a cosmetic concern. However, varicose veins are commonly the cause for emerging spider veins so it is a good idea to consult a physician if there are associated symptoms, such as:
- Pain, aching or cramping
- Swelling or edema
- Skin discoloration
- Skin ulcer
- Bulging veins
- Burning or tingling sensations, throbbing sensations
- Tenderness, dryness and itching/ eczema
Typically, Dr. Massoudi can easily diagnose spider veins visually, or through a physical examination with a Veinlite (an LED instrument that enhances the appearance of veins). However, he may suggest that a patient have an ultrasound evaluation done if they have symptoms. An ultrasound is performed by our registered vascular technicians and is the only way to be sure that there are no further problems with the venous system.
After a thorough examination and review of your medical history, Dr. Massoudi will then sit down with you and discuss what he has determined as the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific needs.
Spider Vein Removal & Treatment
Often, patients are bothered by the appearance of spider veins more than anything else, which makes these veins more of a cosmetic concern. The treatment of choice for spider veins is sclerotherapy. For this treatment, Dr. Massoudi injects an FDA approved sclerosing agent (Sotradecol or Asclera) directly into the faulty veins in order to close them. Sclerotherapy is performed in our office using a special vein light and will usually take no more than 15 minutes. After treatment is over, the veins will be absorbed by the body.
