HDF-IPL- Intense Pulse Light

IPL Facial

HDF-IPL by Aluna Cosmetic – For A Refreshed and More Youthful Appearance

At Aluna Vein Centers, we offer state-of-the-art cosmetic services to help our patients achieve the beautiful and healthy-looking skin they deserve. One of the most popular cosmetic procedures we provide is the High Definition Frequency – Intense Pulsed Light (HDF-IPL) facial treatment or IPL Facial as it’s also called.

Through the use of a bright flashing beam of broad band wavelength of light energy, the desired treatment area on the face, neck or body is targeted to break up dark pigmentation and cauterize red vessels. The IPL facial is a relatively easy treatment for Dr. Massoudi to carry out, with little or no downtime for the patient.

Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about the IPL Facial treatment to help you decide if it’s something you’d like to pursue.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-intensity pulses of bright, visible light to specifically target the pigmented and vascular areas of the skin. This treatment is used to help reduce many different issues/problems with the skin including:
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Freckles
  • Cafe au lait macules (flat, pigmented birthmarks)
  • Melasma (brown to gray patches on the face)
  • Dyschromia (alteration of the color of the skin)
  • Liver spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Port wine stains
  • Rosacea
  • Broken capillaries
The end result of this procedure is skin that is clearer, more vibrant, and healthier looking.

What type of intense pulsed light does Dr. Massoudi use?

Dr. Massoudi uses the largest spot size and the strongest and most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) available. The light is highly targeted to the areas you want to address and is very effective and safe.

Why should I consider having this treatment done?

Many of our patients decide to receive IPL as a corrective treatment to make their skin look more youthful and healthy to achieve the ultimate clear skin they want. Others choose to receive IPL to completely clear up the affected areas of their skin like dark spots, broken capillaries or unwanted freckles.

How many IPL treatments will I need?

That depends upon what is being treated and the severity of the skin issue/problem. Typically, IPL is delivered in a series of three treatments in order to achieve the best results possible. However, some people may require six treatments to achieve the desired results.

Is the IPL procedure safe?

Yes, the IPL facial treatment is extremely safe for most skin types with little to no downtime and minimal side effects.

Is it painful to receive IPL treatment?

Most people who receive IPL treatment only experience low to moderate levels of discomfort that is often described as a warm sensation. We will provide you with a numbing cream during your initial consultation and give you directions for applying it prior to your scheduled treatment. Once you have received the IPL treatment, you may feel as though you have a sunburn. To relieve the sunburn sensation, you can mist your skin with cold water or apply ice packs to the area which should help within 12 hours after you’ve had the treatment done.

How soon will I see improvements in my skin?

That can vary from one patient to the next. Generally speaking, the visible results can be seen as early as a few days up to two weeks, post-treatment.

Am I a good candidate for an IPL facial treatment?

The only way to find out for sure if you’re a good candidate for an IPL facial is to have a consultation with Dr. Massoudi. Typically, the ideal candidate for this procedure is someone with fair to medium skin tone. Untanned Hispanics, Middle Eastern, and Asian people may also receive IPL. Since IPL is designed to target pigmented skin, people with deeply tanned skin or darker skin tones are not good candidates as the treated skin can get worse instead of better.

Are there any side effects I should know about?

As stated above, post-treatment discomfort is common up to 12 hours after the procedure has been done. The pigmented areas treated can get worse before they improve with some mild inflammation and pinkness for one to three days.

How soon can I undergo a second IPL treatment?

That depends on your skin type and how quickly you heal. You may be able to receive another treatment every two to six weeks or as recommended by Dr. Massoudi.

What about downtime?

Once you’ve received the treatment, the area may darken and look similar to a scab. Once this scab flakes off, the new, fresh skin is revealed.

Who should not get an IPL facial?

People who do not make good candidates for IPL facial treatment include:
  • Those with dark skin tone or deeply tanned skin.
  • Anyone who has experienced past adverse reactions to IPL.
  • Pregnant or nursing women.
  • People who have an active infection at or near the desired treatment area.
  • Anyone who has taken Accutane. If you take Accutane, you must be off the medication for a minimum of six months before you have this treatment done.
  • People with heart problems, cancer, a history of seizures or immune system disorders.
  • People who have medical devices implanted in their bodies.
  • Anyone who has been diagnosed with Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2.
  • People with a history of keloid scarring.

How do I care for my newly treated skin at home?

After an IPL facial treatment, it’s important to keep the area moisturized. We may provide you with a special moisturizer to use, or we will recommend one to you. It’s important not to peel or scratch the treated area for optimal healing. If you plan to be outside in the sun, cover the treated area with a thick bandage. You should refrain from using swimming pools, hot tubs, and taking dips in the ocean until your skin has completely healed.

How do I get started?

Once you’ve had your free consultation with Dr. Massoudi, we will help you schedule an appointment time to have the IPL treatment done. We will provide you with a numbing cream that should be applied 30 minutes before your treatment. You will be told to cover the area after applying the cream so that the cream fully absorbs into the skin.
